Special dish
Guaranda is
a small city where you can try fascinating food. I was born there and I was
used to eating dishes that I thought everybody knew. But when I left, I discovered
that I can not get those dishes at a restaurant. And I love going back to taste
again the food I grew with. I will write about elenitas.
Elenitas
are a kind of cookie. They are called like that because the lady who made it
first was called Elena. These delicious hard “cookies” are made from cornmeal. They
look like cookies with color dragees. When you bite them you can hear that they
are crunchy. They are used to left crumbs because of that. The most impressive
thing about them is their taste. Elenitas are sweet, however, they get dry in
your mouth. This is because of cornmeal.
People from
Ecuador often related Elenitas to “moncaibas”, but they are not even close in
flavor and texture. Elenitas are perfect with a cup of milk or alone. This is definitely
something you have to try.
